Presidential Endorsement for Wood Flooring: A New Era
The wood flooring industry, not just in the United States but in the United Kingdom and worldwide, has received a boost after getting approval from the White House due to its environmentally friendly nature. The Obama administration has given its official support to wood flooring as an ecologically friendly building material, and the news, while likely to inevitably have more impact in the United States, can only increase the industry’s overall reputation worldwide.
“This has been a long time coming, and recognition of our industry is well deserved,” says the President of U.S. flooring company Northland Forest Products, Jamey French. “For too long, wood has been discriminated against in green building standards or ignored by environmentally conscious consumers.” French notes that bamboo and cork floors have traditionally been the choice for the ecologically minded consumer due to their strong environmentally friendly reputation, but the fact is that the great majority of wooden flooring, including that used in wood floor restoration, is now sourced from sustainable forests where there are practically more trees being planted every day than there are being chopped down. “Studies show wood compares favorably to competing materials,” admits the United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
Given that wood flooring, long a popular choice has suffered slightly in recent years due to the obsession with all things green, the Presidential endorsement can only boost the industry worldwide.
