Our Parquet Floor Sanding Process — Step by Step

Parquet doesn’t forgive corners cut on prep. Here’s exactly how we approach every job — refined over three decades and 25,000 floors:

1. Free Site Survey & Honest Assessment: A senior technician comes out, walks the floor with you, checks block thickness, looks for loose or missing pieces, identifies any old bitumen residue or moisture issues, and gives you a fixed-price quotation in writing. If we don’t think sanding is the right answer — for example, if the blocks are too thin from previous over-sanding — we’ll tell you straight.
2. Preparation & Block Repairs: Furniture moved, skirtings protected, doorways sealed off. Then we get into the proper prep — re-gluing lifting blocks, sourcing replacements for missing ones (matched as closely as possible to your existing timber), and securing any sections that have come loose over the years.
3. Multi-Direction Sanding: Here’s the bit that separates a parquet specialist from a general floor sander. Because each block runs in a different direction, you can’t simply pass a drum machine up and down the room. 5. Thorough Clean-Down: All fine dust hoovered up, the room left properly clean before any finish goes on. With our dust extraction, there’s very little to clear — but we never skip this step.

Sealing & Finishing: We talk you through the right finish for your room — typically Bona Traffic HD lacquer for busy family hallways and kitchens, Osmo Polyx or Pallmann hardwax oil for a more natural matt look, or a traditional oil for the deepest, richest tones. What makes parquet floor sanding different from regular floorboard sanding?

Two big differences. First, parquet blocks are laid in different directions to create the pattern — herringbone, basket weave, chevron — so you can’t just sand up and down the room like you would with floorboards. We work diagonally in multiple directions to keep the pattern flat and even. Second, the blocks are thinner than floorboards and there’s less margin for error. It’s specialist work, and it’s why we wouldn’t ever recommend tackling parquet as a DIY job.

How do you protect the parquet pattern during sanding?

Controlled passes, lighter pressure than on floorboards, and the right grit sequence. We start at 45 degrees to the dominant pattern direction, then go 45 degrees the other way, and finish with a straight pass. That way no single block sees the grain being cut against it. We use our Bona Belt UX system which is 98% dust-free, plus hand-finish the edges and corners — that’s where amateur jobs always go wrong.

Can parquet floors that have been sanded before be sanded again?

Usually yes — most solid parquet blocks have 8–10mm of usable timber above the tongue, and a professional sand only removes a fraction of a millimetre. Most floors can be sanded 3–4 times in their lifetime. We’ll measure block thickness during the survey and tell you honestly whether there’s enough timber left for another sand. If a floor’s been over-sanded by a previous contractor, we’ll say so rather than press ahead.

What’s the best finish for parquet floors?

Depends on the room and your lifestyle. For high-traffic areas — kitchens, hallways, family living rooms — we recommend Bona Traffic HD water-based lacquer: tough, low-yellowing, dries fast. For a more natural matt look with easy spot-repair, Osmo Polyx or Pallmann hardwax oil is excellent. Traditional oil gives the deepest tones but needs a bit more upkeep. How long does parquet sanding and finishing take?

Most domestic rooms are completed in 2–3 days — that covers sanding, repairs, multiple coats of finish, and the necessary drying time between coats. A large open-plan area or a full ground floor can take 3–5 days. Commercial work is often scheduled overnight or over a weekend so you don’t lose trading days. We give you a clear day-by-day plan before starting.

Will sanding remove water stains, pet stains or dark patches?

Mostly yes. Surface scuffs, sun fading, light water marks and old polish residue all come away with a proper sand. Deep black water stains and severe pet stains sometimes go right through the block — in those cases we’ll talk you through options, which might include localised block replacement, staining the whole floor to even out the colour, or accepting a touch of character. We’ll be straight with you about what’s possible before you commit.

How should I look after my parquet floor after sanding?

Sweep or hoover regularly with a soft brush attachment, avoid wet mopping (a barely-damp microfibre is fine), use felt pads under all furniture legs, and clean with a proper wood-floor cleaner — never multi-surface sprays.
