Transforming Solid Wood Waste into Sustainable Heating Solutions
Waste from solid wood floors now need not be thrown away but can be recycled to heat people’s homes thanks to a new initiative from The National Wood Flooring Association. The use of waste from solid wood floors as a heating source is not much further, having been used by hardwood manufacturers for some time now. Still, the method has not previously been available for use by consumers. Now, however, that is changing. For the waste from solid wood floors, perhaps what has been left over from a new wooden floor installation or wood floor restoration is recycled into wood bricks, which can then be used as a source of firewood. The National Flooring Association claims that the waste materials are intensely compressed together to assemble them into brick form without using any form of adhesive material and have many advantages over more traditional forms of firewood. In addition to the obvious environmental benefits of using recycled waste rather than simply throwing it away, wood bricks are very light to handle and easy to store. They also result in a much cleaner burn, attracting fewer insects or other pests and creating a fire that lasts a fair while longer than traditional firewood. Therefore, using recycled waste from solid wood floors as a heating source has both environmental and economic advantages.
