Fanthorpe’s Expertise: Crafting Warmth for Your Home
John Fanthorpe has been the Managing Director of family owned business JF Joinery for more than three and a half decades, and while the woodworking firm has traditionally been known for its oak windows and doors, in recent years its reputation has been growing in another area – that of flooring products for engineered wooden floors, all the better for ensuring those floors last for longer without needing wood floor repair. In addition, however, Fanthorpe has also come up with a novel solution for the problem of dealing with factory wood waste.
“I noted some time ago the ‘green credentials’ movement” Fanthorpe admits. “We only use wood from sustainable sources and now with WIEMA’s help, (we) convert wood shaving, dust and end wood into something useful and profitable.” Factory wood shavings and dust are fed into a briquetting press that then creates automatically bagged briquettes for local use in the company’s community in North Devon. Prior to the move, wood waste tended to be just put out into the yard for anyone who wanted it to take, something that created both logistical and health-related issues and problems.
As Fanthorpe notes, the process was aided by the purchase of a WEIMA 670 briquetter, which in addition to its main use, also carries with it safety features designed to prevent damage being done to the machine should something other than wood shavings be fed into it. As an example, Fanthorpe cited an incident in which a spanner was accidentally fed into the machine, causing it to stop. While the WEIMA was utterly undamaged, the same could not be said for the spanner!
