Wood floor sanding is a crucial process for revitalising hardwood floors. A well-executed sanding process forms the perfect foundation for an excellent finish, transforming worn-out floors into stunning surfaces. This comprehensive guide shares some fantastic tips to ensure you achieve a great finish through effective wood floor sanding.
Sanding serves several key purposes:
The right tools will make the sanding process easier and more efficient. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ensure that the room is fully cleared out. Remove all furniture, rugs, and decorative elements. Cover vents, doors, and windows with plastic sheeting to contain dust.
Look for protruding nails, staples, or any other material that could damage your sanding equipment or cause an uneven finish. Hammer them down or remove them entirely.
The drum sander will do the heavy lifting. Starting with coarse-grit sandpaper, move the sander steadily and slowly, going with the wood grain. Remember, it’s better to make multiple light passes than one too-deep pass.
Use the edger, fitted with the same grit sandpaper as the drum sander, to reach the perimeter of the room. Move in a sweeping motion to ensure an even finish.
Start with a coarse grit to remove the old finish and scratches. Then, switch to medium and finally fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the floor. Remember to use the same grit sequence with the edger.
Use a vacuum or microfiber mop to clean up the dust before switching to a finer grit. This prevents coarse particles from scratching the floor during the next sanding pass.
After using the mechanical sanders, some spots will still need attention. Use a hand sander or sanding block to reach these areas.
After sanding, the next step is choosing and applying a finish. Your choice of finish will depend on your desired look and the type of wood. Always test a small area before applying the finish to the entire floor.
