Sprigg Lynn, principal officer at Universal Floors in Washington is an expert in wood flooring and has opinions that are truly universal in the flooring world, including what is needed for wood floor restoration.
Lynn certainly knows his stuff, and his views on the wood flooring industry are as relevant to the United Kingdom as anywhere else. “A wood floor is only as good as its subfloor,” he points out. “If you have a good foundation, relatively flat, your floor is going to last. Things like adhesives that are underneath the floor that people don’t pay much mind to – those are the most important things. If you buy the best material you can for underneath the floor, it’s going to outlast any warranty. It also (works as a form of) noise control. Many condominiums have noise ordinances. A lot of adhesives are excellent for that.” Many consumers are primarily concerned with the appearance of their wood flooring, and while Lynn certainly understands that aesthetic obsession, he cautions against it being the overriding reason for choosing certain flooring. “People shouldn’t shop for wood floors on looks alone,” he says, warning that while some floors may look lovely, they can be too soft and wear out very easily, particularly if it is a family with children and pets as opposed to an elderly retired couple. Ultimately, though, Lynn loves the industry. “You can achieve almost any color and style with the proper wood,” he notes.
