What was the job?
Stevenage is a town in the county of Hertfordshire.
A homeowner needed sanding work in their home, including removing the paintwork from a staircase.
Challenges
There were some gaps in floorboards which needed to be filled. The hearth was an obstacle, but there was less of a risk of work spilling over than usual as the area was raised.
Carpet grips on the stairs were blocking sanding machines from having full access to the risers.
Areas:
1/4 landing and a riser: 1 m2
Landing- 0.7 m2
Front bedroom: 9 m2
Back bedroom: 10.4 m2
Steps- 10 treads & risers
How the floor looked before we started work
What we did
After checking all boards were secure on the steps and landing, we removed the carpet grips so we would be unobstructed when sanding the staircase. When sanding off the paint, we had to check the work was still level with the unpainted sections.
The floors had been reasonably well-maintained so there was no major repair work required, but there were small gaps and holes which had to be filled. After that, sanding was routine, using dust free machines before applying lacquer.
The results
There are no longer gaps and holes within the floorboards and the messy stairs are now cleaner and more presentable.
The light tone of the wood compliments the neutral colours on the walls.
