What was the job?
Forest Gate is a residential area in the London borough of Newham.
A homeowner in the area wished to switch from carpeted floors to sanded wood.
Challenges
We did not know the full extent of the damage due to the floorboards being covered by carpet. However, we knew that wood left under carpets goes untreated and there were likely to be gaps.
As the wood had not been maintained, boards had become loose and the gaps were large. Some boards had also become warped.
How the floor looked before we started work
What we did
Several boards had to be refitted as the gaps were too large to be filled with resin. This meant we could simultaneously nail down loose boards before sanding. When all holes and gaps were filled, we started with our dust free machines on the newly level surface.
The client was unsure what colour stain they wanted, so we applied samples to the floor to show how each would appear on the wood. Because of this, the customer chose a light oak stain, which was then used to cover the whole surface. We finished the work by adding matt lacquer.
During the floor restoration
The results
Re-applying boards fixed warping and bending issues which were ruining the surface.
Without carpet blocking the floorboards, it will be easier to maintain and the owners will be able to enjoy the quality of the wood and aesthetics.
Using lacquer protects the sanding work and will also preserve the colour of the stain.
