Hardwood floors are a beautiful and durable option for any home. However, over time, they can get worn out, scratched, and dull. Fortunately, refinishing your hardwood floor can restore its original beauty and extend its lifespan. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of refinishing a hardwood floor step by step.
Refinishing a hardwood floor involves sanding down the old finish to bare wood and then applying a fresh coat of finish. The process can be labour-intensive and time-consuming, but the results are well worth the effort.
Before you start, it’s important to assess the condition of your floor. Minor scratches and dullness can be fixed with a screen and recoat, which involves lightly sanding the floor and applying a new topcoat. However, deep scratches, dents, and discoloration require a complete refinish.
Remove all furniture, rugs, and other items from the room. Cover any vents with plastic sheeting to prevent dust from spreading. Wear your safety gear to protect yourself from dust and fumes.
Rent a drum or orbital sander and start with coarse-grit sandpaper to remove the old finish. Sand the main area of the floor, moving along the grain. Make sure to keep the sander moving to avoid creating divots.
Use an edge sander or hand sander to sand the edges of the room where the drum sander couldn’t reach. Be careful not to sand too deeply and create uneven surfaces.
Inspect the floor for any cracks or gaps, and fill them with wood filler. Let the filler dry as directed.
Sand the floor again using medium-grit sandpaper to remove any filler and smooth out the wood. Follow with fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.
Vacuum the floor thoroughly and wipe with a damp tack cloth to remove any remaining dust.
If you’re changing the colour of your floor, apply your chosen stain. Use a paintbrush to apply the stain along the grain, then wipe off the excess with a cloth. Allow the stain to dry as directed.
Apply a thin, even coat of polyurethane finish using a high-quality paintbrush. Let it dry, then lightly sand the floor with fine-grit sandpaper. Vacuum, wipe with a tack cloth, and apply a second coat. Repeat for a third coat if desired.
Allow the finish to cure for several days before moving furniture back into the room.
Refinishing your hardwood floor can breathe new life into your space and enhance the beauty of your home. While it can be a DIY project, it requires time, patience, and a bit of elbow grease.
