Understanding the Recession’s Effect on Wood Floor Sales | Market Analysis
In recent times, there has been a softening in the sales of wood floors. Many eyes have turned eastward, attributing this to the flood of low-cost wooden floors emanating from China. Yet, the very heart of the matter might reside not in distant shores, but closer to home—the tendrils of an economic downturn.
The whispers of discontent in the United Kingdom regarding these Chinese imports are but a mere ripple compared to the tidal wave of debate that has engulfed the United States. In an attempt to shield its own timber craftsmen, legal steps have been taken against these foreign floorboards. The hope? To revive a domestic market that seems to be limping, not just in the sale of wooden floorings, but also in the realms of its care, such as the art of sanding and the finesse of polishing.

But as one listens closely to the hum of the industry, voices of dissent can be heard. Neil Smith, the man steering the helm at IDS, offers a different perspective. Speaking to CFJ, he notes, “The landscape of demand has shifted. Consumers, house builders, even those in the refurbishment sector, are holding back. The origin of the product doesn’t weigh as much as we think.” He also sheds light on the misconceived notions of quality associated with the Chinese imports, asserting that their craftsmanship is perhaps being overshadowed by their surprisingly modest pricing.
