What was the job?

The owner of a home in Chiswick, West London, wanted to renovate their home. This included taking out old carpets and treating the wooden floorboards underneath. This was a big job because the client was improving the whole house.

Challenges

Floorboards underneath carpet have not been subject to the routine maintenance needed to keep them at a high quality. If gaps develop between the boards, there is no way for the owner to know unless they pull up the carpet. We had to be efficient so the home could still be lived. We were working in several spaces which time management more difficult. How the floor looked before we started work

What we did

Because it was a family home, there was furniture to move out of the work space. After we finished in an area, the furniture was put back with no damage to the treated surface. Some floorboards had to be re-secured Not all floors had carpet, but for the ones that did we removed and disposed of it, revealing the damage to the boards. They were not terrible, but worn and discoloured. This was solved after sanding. Resin filled the small gaps before we used four coats of lacquer.

The results

The floor looked vastly improved after sanding and finishing and the owner of the property was very happy with the results. Without carpet, it will be easier to maintain the floors and see any damages should they occur. Because the floors have been lacquered, this should not happen for years to come.
