What was the job?

Robert Browning Primary School is a London school in Walworth, Southwark. Some classroom floors were no longer suitable for purpose and needed repairing before teaching could continue.

Challenges

Two classrooms had other surfaces over the wood, so we were unsure what the state of the floorboards was until they were exposed. Areas: 

Top floor classroom Year 3-4 – 56.3m2 – 5` Pine

Top floor classroom Year 5 – 56.3m2 – 5` Pine

First floor classroom Year 2 – 56.3m2 – 4` Pine

What we did

The services were not the same for all classrooms. The Year 3-4 classroom was the simplest, only requiring minor repairs (nailing down and repairing loose floorboards) before we began sanding.

For the Year 5 classroom, we had to uplift the existing carpet, vinyl and hardboard then dispose of it. When that was done, we saw which floorboards needed securing and where any repairs had to be administered.

The Year 2 classroom had a carpet we were asked to remove. After this was task was completed, we could see that there were floorboards which needed securing in the room.

All floors were coated with four layers of heavy duty traffic lacquer after being sanded, vacuumed and buffed.

The results

Each classroom is now more appropriate for teaching and, as there are no loose boards, safer for young children. Heavy duty lacquer should provide a few years extra years for the floor, combating the heavy daily footfall of a school. Without carpet or vinyl, it will be easier to maintain the floors.
