1. Photos, measurements and an honest read

It all starts with understanding the floor. Photos let us see the wood type, the wear pattern, the existing coating, the gaps, the staining, any previous repairs and the access. A short video is even better because it shows the light, how the rooms flow into each other and whether you’ve got any raised boards or loose blocks. If we genuinely need to do a site visit, we’ll say so — no pretending we can quote blind when we can’t.

2. Preparation and proper repairs

Before the sander even comes off the van, we check for loose boards, proud nails, unstable parquet blocks, damaged edges and crumbly old filler. Repairs can include securing loose parquet, replacing knackered boards, filling gaps with a resin mix matched to the timber, correcting surface damage and getting the floor properly ready. Skip this stage and the sanding just exposes every fault.

3. Controlled, dust-managed sanding

Most floors get sanded in stages, working through progressively finer abrasives. The point isn’t to grind off as much timber as possible — original Cardiff pine boards aren’t thick, and engineered oak even less so. The point is to take off the old finish, level the surface where possible, and prepare the timber for an even finish. 4. Buffing, polishing and final prep

After the main sanding, the floor gets buffed or polished to refine the surface. This stage matters more than people realise — poor final prep shows straight through the finish, especially on parquet, pine and anything you’re staining lighter. We hoover the floor down properly and tack off before primer, lacquer, oil or hardwax oil goes anywhere near it.

5. Primer, lacquer, oil or stain

The finish gets chosen around how you actually use the space. Clear lacquer is the workhorse for busy Cardiff family homes — durable, easy to maintain, quick to recoat. Oils give a warmer, more natural look and spot-repair beautifully, which is handy in period homes where character matters. Stains and colour oils change the look dramatically, but they need careful sampling because pine, oak and parquet all soak up colour differently. We’ll always do a test patch first.

6. Final checks and aftercare

Once the last coat is down, we walk you through drying times, when furniture can come back, how to clean the floor properly and what to avoid for the first week or two. We want the floor looking great the day we leave — but more importantly, we want it still looking great two years down the line.
