  • Intermediate passes to refine the surface
  • Fine sanding to prepare the floor for staining, oiling, waxing or lacquering

This step is not just about appearance. Proper sanding is vital for adhesion, durability and the overall performance of your chosen finish.

What is gap filling?

Gap filling is the process of closing up the gaps between floorboards or parquet blocks. On older timber floors, gaps appear for several reasons:

  • Natural shrinkage of timber over time
  • Previous repairs and patching
  • Poor original installation
  • Seasonal movement due to changes in humidity

Professional gap filling improves:

  • Warmth – fewer draughts creeping up from below
  • Cleanliness – dust, pet hair and crumbs can no longer fall through

For most traditional pine floorboards and many parquet floors, we typically carry out a primary sand first, then gap fill, then sand again. Here’s why that sequence of Gap Filling and Sanding works so well.

1. Creating a clean, keyed surface

Old floors are usually coated in layers of varnish, wax, polish, paint and general grime. If you try to fill gaps while those coatings are still in place, the filler can only stick to the old finish – not the wood itself.

By starting the process with an initial sand, we:

  • Strip away old finishes and dirt
  • Expose fresh, bare timber
  • Create a “keyed” surface to which resins and adhesives can bond securely

This gives a much stronger foundation for the next stage of gap filling and then sanding work and drastically reduces the risk of fillers popping out later.

2. Getting a true picture of the floor

Once the first sand is complete, you can clearly see:

  • Which gaps are cosmetic and which are structural
  • Where boards are loose, cracked or missing

When Gap Filling Comes First – and Why

Although we usually sand first on traditional boards, there are situations where we tackle certain gap filling and structural work before the main sanding stages.

1. Large movement or missing boards

If there are obvious gaps caused by missing sections of floor, severe movement or previous bad repairs, we may:

  • Install new boards or parquet blocks
  • Use timber strips or slivers to build up large voids
  • Screw or fix boards more securely to the subfloor

In these cases, the “gap filling” is closer to structural carpentry, and it makes sense to deal with it before most of the sanding. Then, later stages of gap filling and then sanding work refine and blend everything together.

2. Parquet lifting and hollow spots

On parquet floors, loose blocks can cause gaps that no amount of resin will fix. These need to be lifted, cleaned and re-bonded before a full sand; otherwise, they will simply move and crack any filler you apply.

Here, the sensible sequence is:

  1. Lift and relay loose blocks
  2. Carry out an initial sand
  3. Apply resin-based fillers to hairline gaps
  4. Complete the fine sanding and finishing process

Resin Mix vs Timber Strips – and How Each Affects the Order

Resin mix gap filling

Resin fillers are ideal for:

  • Hairline gaps between boards
  • Small cracks and nail holes
  • Parquet blocks with fine movement lines

Because resin mix is blended with sanding dust from your own floor, it depends heavily on the correct sequence of Gap Filling and Sanding. Typically, we will:

  1. Sand the floor to a mid-grit level to remove finishes and create dust
  2. Mix the resin with that dust on-site
  3. Work the filler across the floor, ensuring all gaps are filled
  4. Sand again to remove excess and refine the surface

Done in this order, resin-based Gap Filling and Sanding produces a smooth, even, colour-consistent surface that’s ready for staining, oiling or lacquering.

Strip or sliver gap filling

Timber strips or slivers are used where gaps are simply too big for resin to perform well – for example, old floors where the original boards have shrunk significantly.

The process usually involves:

  • Cutting tapered timber strips to match the existing wood
  • Gluing and tapping them firmly into place
  • Allowing adequate drying time
  • Sanding the floor to blend strips with the old boards

Here, much of the “gap filling” happens before the final sanding stages, and careful sanding and filling techniques are what make everything look seamless.

Common Problems When the Order Is Wrong

Unfortunately, we’re often called in to rescue floors where the original work has been done in the wrong sequence, or corners have been cut. Here are some of the problems we see.

1. Fillers cracking and falling out

If fillers are applied over old varnish or polish, or if large gaps are filled with brittle compound instead of proper strips, the floor’s natural movement will quickly cause cracks. The result? Dust traps, draughts and unsightly lines reappearing within months.

2. Visible “tramlines” and colour mismatch

Improperly timed Gap Filling and Sanding can leave pale or dark “tramlines” along every board edge. That often happens when pre-mixed filler is used without dust from the actual floor, or when sanding is rushed after the filler has sunk.
